The Cerro de los Cristales hike is easily accessible by car from El Calafate. Part of the route is a simple dirt road. This hike offers an excellent opportunity to escape the crowds of tourists who flock to the Perito Moreno glacier. During the ascent, which is sometimes steep but not too technically demanding, we enjoy superb views of Lakes Roca and Argentino, as well as breathtaking panoramas of the mountains and the Perito Moreno glacier in the distance.
Our original plan was to climb to the summit of Cerro de los Cristales. In good weather (which is not always guaranteed in Patagonia), you can see the Torres del Paine and Fitz Roy. Before starting the hike, a park ranger informs us that, due to the poor condition of the trail after recent bad weather, the upper part of the trail is closed.
We set off anyway, and after climbing some 700 meters, we can already enjoy the peace and quiet of this vast wilderness landscape and take in the stunning panorama. A little off the path, we settle down for a picnic in a spot with a breathtaking view. We are lucky enough to spot two condors flying not far above us.
